Ram Tirath Temple History: This temple is a birth place of Lava & Kusha. It is an ancient Valmiki Pilgrimage. Lava & Kusha were sons of Lord Ramachandra. Ram Tirath is located 10 Kilometres to the west of Amritsar on Lopoke Road. Ram Tirath temple is directly connected to the Saint Maharishi Valmiki. As per the beliefs and history, Maharishi Valmiki gave shelter to Sita (Wife of Rama) in this Ashram. Goddess Sita gave birth to twins Lava & Kusha on this place. Saint Valmiki composed Ramayana at this place only. Ram Tirath is a place where the historical fight between Rama’s force and Lav & Kush took place.
There is an ancient tank on the side of this temple. It was dug by Lord Hanuman for Goddess Sita. Sita used to take bath in this tank. Maharishi Valmiki trained and taught Lav & Kush here to make them perfect in every field. A small hut, where Saint Valmiki lived is still there in this temple. There is 30 feet broad path (Parikarma) around the tank where Pilgrims take a round after taking the holy dip in this tank. Pilgrims can be seen chanting mantras of ‘Ram Ram’ here.
Ram Tirath Temple History is associated with one more event, where temple officials arrange a big fair every year after Diwali night at this place. This fair lasts for four to five days. Many people come and take blessings of Saint Valmiki and Lord Rama. Pilgrims have dip in the holy tank in the early hours of full moon night. They consider it very propitious. Women lighten the lamps fed with Ghee and float them on the water of tank with the help of leaf. The activity is called ‘Tulla Tairna’ which they consider to please Lord Rama & wash off the sins.
